Sunset in the sky

As the days get longer and the sun travels more to the north, it gives a wonderful scenery in the sky.

Then I started noticing that just before and after sunset, there is this faint sun pillar in the sky.

A sun pillar is a vertical column of light that appears above or below the sun, creating a stunning visual effect. It occurs when sunlight interacts with ice crystals in the atmosphere, typically from high-altitude cirrus clouds. Here’s how it works:

Ice Crystals: When the sun is low on the horizon (such as during sunrise or sunset), its light passes through a layer of hexagonal ice crystals. These crystals can be found in thin, wispy clouds.

Light Refraction: As sunlight enters the ice crystals, it refracts (bends) and splits into different colors. The hexagonal shape of the crystals causes the light to spread out vertically.

Pillar Formation: The refracted light rays bounce off the bottom faces of the ice crystals and create a vertical column of light. This column appears as a bright pillar extending upward or downward from the sun.

Colorful Display: Sun pillars can exhibit various colors, including red, orange, pink, and purple. The specific colors depend on the angle of the sun, the size of the ice crystals, and atmospheric conditions.

Sunset and Sunrise: Sun pillars are most commonly seen just before sunset or just after sunrise when the sun is near the horizon. The low angle allows the light to pass through more ice crystals, enhancing the effect.

Remember, these beautiful phenomena are temporary and can vanish quickly as the sun moves. So if you ever spot a sun pillar, take a moment to appreciate its natural wonder!

New year with sunset

This year has started with great sunsets.

This one is awesome because it has the mist in the middle of the horizon and there isn't any straight line between sky and the ground.

And this one was just two days after. I thought about taking my camera and set it up for timelapse shooting, but then I thought about it that the sun was already settling in and I would caught the sunset in the middle.

Although I took a short video with my phone camera.

Cloud shadows and puffy ones

I should really start to carrying my DSLR when ever I am outside. As I was walking my dog the other day, clouds played shadow game in the sky and I cursed a bit in my mind that I didn't take the DSLR after all.

Okay, it really doesn't show that much when you compare to wider shot from the same camera.

Puffy clouds that look like bits of cotton wool floating in lots of blue sky are a sign of fair weather.  Also they are called Altocumulus clouds.

This time of the year clouds are making wonderful paintings in the sky, just when it is settling in or just about rise for the new day.

Few pictures with iPhone 13 from the Köyliö.

Sun was just about to settle in when I was walking my dog and there were a bit mist in the air too.

This was taken very late in the evening, but as the iPhone 13 has great camera and snow in the ground reflects the light, it luminated these threes so surreal for the night time.

Same three trees in the morning, just before sun rises above the horizon, but different angle too.

This is the same birch alley that I posted in my Roadscape.photography blog.

Long time from last time

This use to be my blog where IFTT posted what I posted on my now deleted Instagram with tag Sky is my canvas. Now I thought I just start to post straight to here when I encounter something worth while.

So here are few photos from past... I don't really know.

That's from February 2020. Nahkalinna's dam.

Sun had just settled in, in November 2020.

Milkyway from "my backyard", which is roughly 100 meter away park from my own yard.

Burning February Sunset.

I has been a long time since I took a view from our balcony and it was great looking sunset tonight. I almost thought setting up a time lapse for it, but I knew by this time it was way too late for it, but there is always next evening to try it out.
